Floor mats are the most heavily used surface in the entire vehicle. Every step brings sand, leaves, water or road salt into the car. Many people who want to start cleaning car floor mats grab the garden hose or a pressure washer and do more harm than necessary. Yet proper care is simple once you know the material.
In this guide you will learn how to gently clean rubber mats, 3D floor mats and leather-look 5D mats, which products to avoid and how often a thorough clean makes sense.

Preparation: always take the mats out
Never clean floor mats while they are installed. Take all mats out of the car, shake off loose dirt and then vacuum the footwell underneath. Sand and moisture often collect under the driver’s mat where you can’t see them from above. Be careful with the fastening clips when removing the mats so they don’t break.
A dry day is ideal for cleaning car floor mats: the mats can air-dry after cleaning before you put them back.
Cleaning rubber and 3D mats
Rubber or TPE mats are the easiest to care for. Cleaning car floor mats of this type only takes water, a brush and a little washing-up liquid. Here’s how:
- Shake out coarse dirt or sweep it off with a soft brush.
- Rinse the mat with lukewarm water. A garden hose is perfectly sufficient.
- Treat stubborn spots with a little mild washing-up liquid and a brush.
- Rinse thoroughly so no soap residue remains. It makes the surface slippery.
- Let the mat dry standing upright or hanging, not in direct sunlight.
A pressure washer can be used on 3D mats, but keep your distance and use low pressure. A jet held too close can roughen the surface texture, which then traps even more dirt in future.
Caring for leather-look 5D mats
5D floor mats have a padded faux-leather surface. They are waterproof and easy to wipe clean, but they need a little more care than pure rubber mats:
- Remove dust and crumbs with a vacuum cleaner and a soft brush nozzle.
- Wipe the surface with a damp microfibre cloth.
- For stains, use a mild faux-leather cleaner or some diluted washing-up liquid.
- Don’t use a pressure washer on the seams, as water can get into the middle layer.
- Let them dry completely before putting them back.
This keeps the premium look for years, and the mats still look well kept when you sell the car.
Removing road salt: the most important winter step
In a Swiss winter, wet shoes leave white salt marks on every mat. Salt is not just a visual issue: it attracts moisture and can attack metal parts in the footwell if it gets underneath through a leaky mat.
A simple mix of warm water and a splash of vinegar helps against salt marks. Apply, leave briefly, loosen with a brush and rinse with clean water. With high-edged mats, meltwater collects in the tray. Empty it regularly in winter, ideally after every longer drive into the mountains. We explain why Switzerland is especially demanding in our article on the Swiss winter.
Mistakes to avoid when cleaning car floor mats
- Dashboard spray or silicone care on the driver’s mat: It makes the surface slippery and your shoes can slide off the pedals.
- Washing machine: Unsuitable for rubber and 5D mats; they can lose their shape.
- Solvents and wheel cleaners: They attack the material and can cause discolouration.
- Putting mats back wet: Wet mats on the floor carpet encourage odours and mould.

How often should you clean car floor mats?
There is no fixed rule, but these guidelines have proven useful:
- Summer: Shake out every two weeks, thorough clean once a month.
- Winter: Empty meltwater weekly, remove salt marks every two weeks.
- After a ski day or a trip with the dog: Empty and rinse immediately, before the dirt dries.
The boot deserves attention too. A waterproof trunk mat can be removed and rinsed just as easily as the floor mats.
When new mats are worth it
At some point even the best care no longer helps. When the heel area is worn through, the edge is torn or the mat no longer lies flat, it’s time to think about a replacement. A deformed driver’s mat can slide under the pedals and become a safety risk.
At myfussmatten.ch you will find custom-fit car floor mats for many vehicle models, individually or as a practical set with trunk mat. Easy to care for, waterproof and shaped so that cleaning takes just a few minutes from now on.
